General Administration

State Lands is one of the smaller agencies within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources with 19 employees.  Its operating budget for the fiscal biennium is just over 3,785,000.  State Lands has statewide responsibilities but per Nevada Revised Statute (NRS) maintains its office at the seat of government – Carson City.  The agency was created by the legislature in 1957 but has direct ties back to the Surveyor General which was an elected constitutional office from the time of statehood in 1864.  

Responsibilities of the agency over the years have included:

  • Facilitate surveys of state, state boundaries, and county boundaries
  • Keep copies of surveys and maps
  • Keep and publish information about state natural resources, mining, and agriculture
  • Accept grant lands from federal government
  • Sell grant lands
  • Keep records of all grant land actions
